If you’re looking for a twist on your regular burgers at your summer BBQs, then why not spice things up with some Caribbean flavour? Burgers are so easy to make yourself and these Jerk Burgers With Mango & Tomato Salsa will liven up any summer gathering because they’re packed full of sunshine vibes and would work really well with my Peri Peri Oven Baked Wedges.
I’m hoping that you’re all going to enjoy today’s recipe as much as I enjoyed creating and eating it. On a mission to bring a healthy version of fast food into the home that is quicker and easier than going out to order and collect it yourself, these burgers are just the thing.
Who needs fast food chains, when you can make your own burgers at home? I love homemade comfort foods and even though we do buy takeaways occasionally as a treat, it’s nice knowing what ingredients are actually going into your food. It can also work out a lot cheaper too - this recipe makes 6 burgers and they freeze well. Even if you don’t need all 6 burgers at one time you have some stashed away for an easy dinner another time.
Instead of using breadcrumbs to help the burgers stick together, I used 1 egg making them great for gluten-free diets. I found that the bread really isn’t needed after letting them rest in the fridge to firm up. Also, I opted to bake these burgers in the oven, so that no oil is used during the cooking process. If you are making them for a BBQ, you can still bake them in the oven, but finish them off outside on the BBQ so that they still get that delicious charred flavour.
BBQs can get a little frantic at times with lots of food to prepare and people to entertain. Rather than ending up with everything burnt to a crisp, which can happen so easily with the high heat from the charcoals something like the SuperFast Thermapen 4 Thermometer is great for making sure your food is cooked correctly. I like my beef burgers to be medium to well done, so as soon as the Thermapen reached 69 degrees I knew that they were ready. It really does take the guesswork out of cooking and it’s intelligent backlit display senses varying light levels, meaning that there are no issues for it working near a smokey BBQ.
Don’t forget to go totally mad on the toppings too, we had the mango and tomato salsa with and it worked really well with those warm jerk spices.

- 500 g Minced beef
- 2 tbsp Jerk paste
- 2 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 medium sized egg
- Seasonings
- 1/2 fresh mango diced
- 6 cherry tomatoes halved
- 1/2 red onion diced
- 3 tbsp coriander finely chopped
- Juice of 1 lime
-
Preheat the oven to 180 degrees.
-
Stir all the ingredients for the burgers together in a large bowl and portion and shape into 6 burgers.
-
Place the burgers on some greaseproof paper and place in the fridge for at least an hour to allow them to firm up. If skipping this step, bake them in the oven for 20 minutes or until the cooked or until the core temperature of the burgers is between 69-71 degrees using a SuperFast Thermapen 4 Thermometer.
-
While the burgers are cooking prepare the mango salsa and stir together with the lime juice. Set aside until needed.
-
Once cooked, assemble the burgers in your preferred bun and top with the mango salsa before serving. Enjoy!
You can cook these straight on the BBQ. Alternatively, you can cook them in the oven and take them out of the oven 5 minutes before being fully cooked and finish them on the BBQ to still achieve that charred flavour.

I love the flavour of Jerk. So many jerk chicken places where I live (but not sure of the quality of the chicken…). Love the idea of putting the flavours in a burger and eating it. Lovely recipe
It’s one of my favourites too. Yeah, I know what you mean about the chicken 🙂
