OK, so who’s excited that the sunshine has finally arrived? I know my hand is enthusiastically waving in the air. Everything always feels so much better when the sun is shining and I love getting a healthy dose of vitamin D from mother nature.
If like me, as soon as the sun decides to play ball you start planning lots of outdoor activities to make the most of it, it’s important to remember to also take care of your skin too. We often forget to look after our skin because we’re busy having fun, but it’s important to protect it as much as possible from the sun’s harmful rays. It can feel like a challenge and another thing to add to your to-do list, however, I’m sharing some of my own rituals from my summer skincare routine, which I’ve found really easy and not too tasking to incorporate into my daily routine.
Remember To Stay Hydrated
It sounds simple, doesn’t it? Drink up to 2 liters of water a day to stay hydrated and keep your skin looking fresh and your body nourished. However, it’s something that many of us struggle with, including me. I like to keep a pretty refillable bottle of water on my desk that I can keep topping up throughout the day that helps me stay accountable. Also, when I’m not feeling the love for water, I like to jazz things up by adding berries or citrus fruits to my glass to help infuse it with more flavour.
Invest in a High Factor Suncream
Since turning 30 and having a child, this is something that I’ve become pretty big on. I used to be the determined sun worshipper and didn’t give my poor skin a second thought, but with a desire to want to grow old gracefully protecting my skin from the sun has become a top priority. Using a high factor suncream and remembering in to reapply it throughout the day if advised is a big help. Also, mixing in suncream with your daily moisturiser or using one that contains an SPF is a great way to protect your face from the sun.
Exploring Natural Alternatives
I’m always on the lookout for new natural skin care alternatives to help reduce the number of chemicals in my skin routine. To cool down my skin in the heat after a workout or a long walk I’ve been testing Nelsons Arnicare Cooling Gel, which is lovely to massage into overtired legs to help revive them. What I really like about it is that it’s non-greasy and easily absorbed by the skin making it quick and easy to apply. The traditional natural herb arnica is mixed with grapefruit and menthol to refresh and cool down the skin – a wonderful and fuss-free way to soothe the skin if you’ve been out in the sun all day.
Also, part of the Nelsons Arnica range is the Arnica Cream that is designed to help treat bruising. With a spirited 3-year-old who is like a bull in a china shop, you can imagine how many scrapes he gets himself into, so I was rather grateful when this landed on my doorstep. More often than not, there’s an incident that needs treating and I love that if a bruise comes up I can take care of it with a herbal medicinal product.

Give Your Lips Some TLC
Our lips are often neglected in the summer, especially when we have the extra task of applying suncream. I like to apply a lip balm that contains a broad spectrum SPF to keep them nourished and protected from the sun’s rays.
Rejuvenate Your Skin With A Skin Care Routine
In the heat, your skin is likely to sweat which can lead to blocked pores if not cleaned properly. I love having a morning and night time skin care routine because it makes me feel like I’m getting that extra bit of self care in my day with a pamper session, but I also know that it’s doing my skin the world of good. In the warmer months, I tend to opt for a lighter moisturiser on my face to help keep my skin as clear as possible.
So there are some of my routines and rituals that I have been using to help keep my skin healthy throughout summer. I’d love to hear all about your tops tips in the comments below.
