Shifting From a Negative to a Positive Mindset
Try these simple and actionable ideas to help you shift to a more positive mindset when you’re feeling low.
When we’re in a funk, it can be so easy to let it consume you and ruin your entire day. We’ve all been there and harnessing the powerful magic of mindset can really help.
Mindset is the missing link in health and wellbeing. There is a massive bias in the media towards how many calories we’re burning or how many salads we’re eating when it comes to health, however, the way we think and the language that we use about ourselves is just as important. It underpins everything in our lives from our careers, relationships and life choices, it’s a vital facet of what makes us who we are.
As part of my mini-coaching series over on my IGTV channel I recently shared a video on how to shift from a negative to a positive mindset. I’m conscious that people consume their information in different ways so wanted to share the tools and guidance that I mentioned in a blog post as well.
Create a Gratitude Practice
I’m heavily invested in the power of a daily gratitude practice. I’ve seen it mentioned elsewhere that it’s just a form of burying your head in the sand during negative situations, but it’s far from this. It’s a form of self-preservation and a reminder to yourself that even during dark times rays of sunshine can be found. It’s a way of not being consumed by a negative situation.
To help my coaching clients build a gratitude practice I get them to write down 3 things that they’re grateful for every day. They don’t have to be big things, for example:
- I’m grateful that the sun shone today
- I’m grateful for my own space
- I’m grateful for the nourishing food that’s helped me feel good today
If you don’t have the time to make a ritual of writing them down, jot them down in the Notes app on your phone or even just say them out loud to yourself or partner/friend.
Find Some Positive Affirmations That You Connect With
If you didn’t know by now, I’m a massive fan of an affirmation or quote to help cultivate a more positive mindset. This is why I share one daily in the morning on my Instagram Stories to help spread a little positivity to start the day.
There are so many on Pinterest and Instagram to take inspiration from. You can collect a few that you really connect with an print them out or create a screensaver for your laptop to refer to when you’re feeling down. When you are in a negative space, look at these affirmations and soak up those good vibes to help you shift to a more positive mindset.
Practice Some Self Care For a Positive Mindset
Making some time for yourself is a simple, but effective way to move your focus away from a stressful or anxiety inducing situation. It will help you regroup your thoughts, find some clarity and relax. Do anything that brings you joy, big or small from reading a book, going for a walk, meditation or yoga – whatever makes you happy!
Practicing some self care will help to create a more positive space to give your mindset a little boost.
Take Responsibility and Don’t Play The Victim
This sounds really harsh, but it’s true. You’re responsible for your own happiness and it’s up to you to make it happen. Taking ownership of your own happiness is a great reminder that you can tap into it anytime. It’s up to you to find the magic and make it happen.
Use The Power Of Reframes
Reframes are a fantastic tool to use when trying to shift from a negative to a positive mindset. The way that we talk to ourselves can have a massive impact on our mindset. If you’re telling yourself negative things, flip it around into something more positive.
For example, if you’re going to a job interview…
- Negative mindset “I’m not good enough or worthy enough for this job”
- Positive reframe “I’m deserving and have everything that I need within me for this job”
We talk a lot about mindset in the Unconditionally Nourished Collective.
I would love to know in the comments what tools or exercises you do to help shift from a negative to a positive mindset. Have you tried any of the things mentioned above?
